Your First Step For Molding Silicone Rubber The first thing that you will want to do is to get your actual mold made. For this step you will use basic kids oil based modeling clay. Simply press what ever it is that you want to reproduce in silicone, in to the modeling clay and then carefully remove it. Sticking Can Be a Problem If there is any problem with sticking, try putting what ever it is that you are pressing into the clay in your freezer for a while. The thin layer of ice on it when you remove it will help to prevent it from sticking to the oil based clay. Now Your Molding Silicone Rubber! Once you have made your impression in the clay, give it a thin coat of gloss spray paint. After it dries, give it a thin coat of silicone spray. Then you can squeeze the silicone from your tube into the mold that you have created, being careful to avoid creating voids or bubbles. Let It Cure Thoroughly If you have to do any smoothing of the silicone, first dip your finger in denatured alcohol. This will help it to glide over the surface smoothly and also prevent the silicone from sticking to your finger as well. Remember to give the silicone plenty of time to cure thoroughly before puling it from the mold.
